One Tall Building and a Creep: Part II
(Continued from: One Tall Building and a Creep)
Today was it: my big interview at my favorite Chicago building.
After a morning of preparation (printing out resume copies and listening to Frank Sinatra), I hailed a cab and told the driver where to stop. Upon stepping out of the taxi, I peeked at the time on my phone. One hour early. Perfect. I explored a local Walgreens for quite awhile to kill some time, before finally deciding to walk over to the Big Beauty.
This Big Beauty has several different doors, so I decided to compare entrance addresses with the one I had written down from an interview confirmation e-mail. The number of the address I had written down matched the one on the first entrance…if you added twenty-five. I wondered if there could be enough entrances to create such an increase in numbers. I also noticed that the location I had written down had an odd address, while my favorite building’s was even.
My heart dropped when the realization hit. I crossed the street in a panic, attempting to play matching games with the numbers in the half an hour I had left. I had headed to the interview today thinking the company I applied for was inside of my favorite building. The company I applied for was across the street.
After the interview, I came home to write and stared at my computer wallpaper, which I had changed to a picture of the Big Beauty this past weekend. I had consistently looked at it for motivation and had also had consistently counted floors, estimating where I would interview.
Sure, if I take this job, I’ll get to see the Big Beauty on a daily basis, and at least I can no longer classify myself as a creep regarding the phone interview incident. However, I must admit to feeling a bit heartbroken. I really believed some part of the building had used its old charm to help me during that first interview, and I was really looking forward to seeing it from the inside, every day. I suppose I’ll have to see what kind of jobs it does have to offer.
